Wart Removal Facts
The need for wart removal is widespread since many people will at one point or another have experienced finding a wart somewhere on their body. Warts can come in many shapes, sizes and colors and appear anywhere from the hands to the face, feet to genitals, and everywhere in between. A small lesion of skin that is hardened and discolored with a bumpy surface is a sure sign of a wart. It is said that as many as 75 percent of the population will have experienced a wart at some point, so although it may cause feelings of self consciousness it is definitely nothing to feel ashamed or embarrassed about.
One common wives tale is that warts are caused by touching frogs or toads. Because warts are extremely common among children it’s easy to see how this particular myth has become a popular explanation. It’s much easier to tell a child that touching toads and frogs gave them warts than to elaborate on the medical details that the parent may not even be aware of themselves. Hence that becomes a popular explanation as children grow up and tell their children the same thing.
A wart is actually a benign skin tumor, caused by a common skin virus. This could sound very scary if a doctor said this without explaining that benign means non cancerous, and tumor is simply the technical term for any abnormal growth or tissue mass.
The virus that causes warts penetrates the bodies epidermis (skin) anywhere it can, and is called the Human Papillomavirus, with different sub-types of this virus causing different types of warts. Once the virus has managed to penetrate the skin, it resides in the bottom layer and begins to start infecting the epidermal cells. This virus is spread simply through direct contact with warts. Touching a wart and then touching another part of the body can cause spreading of infection, just as the sharing of clothing or wash items like razors, towels and even soap bars.
Different types of warts that are commonly found are the Verruca Vulgaris, which is in fact the name of the Common Wart, found mostly on the hands, elbows and knees and is not the name of the Foot Wart, even though many people also call a foot wart a Verruca.
The Foot Wart is also known as a Plantar Wart, due to being found on the sole of the feet. Because of the pressure constantly applied to this area these warts will usually grow inwards rather than outwards, and in turn makes these an often painful experience.
Flat Warts are a flat topped smoother looking wart that often appears on the face, or on legs often as a reaction to shaving.
Genital Warts are a common sexually transmitted disease, and can take the appearance of common warts, or sometimes small papules that group together over time to form a larger infected mass. Genital warts have been known to trigger cervical cancer in women, so as well as looking unsightly for the sufferer these warts can be quite dangerous and of all the types if you found yourself with this infection it would be wise to see a doctor.
Over the years various methods have been developed to remove warts, however preventing yourself from contracting the wart Virus in the first place is the most effective remedy. The only real method of wart prevention is avoiding contact with the papillomavirus completely. You may or may not contract warts from coming into contact with the virus, that depends on how susceptable overall your body is to this type of infection. Avoid scratching any warts that may already be there as this can spread the infection, and don’t share things like razors, underwear and towels. Also when frequenting gyms or swimming pools or similar places avoid walking around barefoot in the shower room or changing area where ever possible.
